This region of what was Virginia prior to 1821 was settled first by the Scotch and Irish and later the Germans followed. Today many of the early pioneer names are still heard in the region such as McNeel, Hill, Burner, Arbogast, Sharp, Underwood, Moore, Gay, Waugh, Kinnison, and many others.
