Allegheny Echoes returns to Marlinton

In the Appalachian Mountains when people hear the name Mike Bing they automatically think of Allegheny Echoes. The two have been together since 1997 when Mike, Kirk Judd, Sherrell Wigal, John Blisard and Monica Bing established the Allegheny Echoes annual summer workshops in Pocahontas County.

What started out as a small undertaking with 28 students has become a much followed celebration of music, culture, and heritage in the Appalachians. The technically gifted instructors all hail from West Virginia or have a close attachment to the region. Mike insists teachers have a personal connection to the area. Bonds of loving West Virginia spawn an appreciation of mountain culture that weeps into the lyrics, into the melodies.

Exceptional teachers work with all students

Starting at Snowshoe in 1997, the workshops rapidly outgrew their early home. Now with almost 150 eager students the small town of Marlinton plays host to the five day event during June. Students come from dozens of states and recently from Japan, Belgium, and Germany.

The students perform on Thursday evening to a standing room only crowd, only to be outdone by the instructors’ concert the next evening. Those not finding a seat indoors park on the steps outside tapping their feet.

When one event is over, Mike and his wife Monica begin making plans for next year’s event. The resourceful couple work throughout the year raising money so no student is turned away due to lack of funds. During the 2008 workshops, 61 of the students who participated were on scholarship.

Creative writing, fundamental wood working, and music development are taught in an assortment of workshops against a backdrop of rugged mountains and crystal clear rivers. Appreciating the rich mountain culture which produces such sounds and words is intrinsic to the experience. Click here for more information.
