Blizzard 2009 Hits Pocahontas County
Well, we survived Blizzard 2009 unscathed. Three days later we still have massive piles of snow, but roads are clear and the sun is now shining on the beautiful snowy fields.
Snowshoe Mountain is buzzing with the new snowfall, which is much appreciated after the slow start to the season. While Snowshoe had planned to get most of the trails open for the holidays before the storm, the extra help from Mother Nature means great conditions on those trails as they drop the ropes. Cupp Run, Snowshoe’s 1.5 mile long trail dropping 1,500 vertical feet, is projected to open Friday.
If you are planning to come to Pocahontas County in the next couple of weeks to enjoy the new snowfall, you might notice that if you didn’t act months ago much of the lodging at Snowshoe is already booked for the holiday season and on weekends. But don’t fret because Pocahontas County has lots of lodging options to fit yours needs. Located just 10 miles from the resort is the town of Cass. This town is known far and wide by train enthusiasts who visit the area during the summer to ride the Cass Scenic Railroad; and while you won’t hear the train whistle during these snowy months, Cass still offers afordable lodging options for those willing to stay away from the mounatin. Just a little further are the towns of Bartow, Dunmore, and Green Bank. Here you will find some cozy B&B and cabin options. And finally Marlinton, located about 20 miles from Snowshoe, offers a variety of lodging options (think B&Bs, cabins, motels, and lodges) along with a charming town. For information about these lodging options call 800.336.7009 or visit our website.
Happy holidays everyone and THINK SNOW,
